Today, I attended aespa's first VR concert, a collaboration between SM Entertainment and AmazeVR.
Here are my observations and reviews of my first K-POP Idol VR concert:
Personalized Concert Experience
- The concert felt tailor-made for me.
- Unique experiences such as eye contact, which aren’t feasible at offline concerts, were highlights.
- The ability to view favorite members up close, as near as 10cm, was remarkable.
- Noticing details like outfits and makeup enhanced the enjoyment.
- AESPA's presence felt incredibly real and exhilarating.
VR/Metaverse Experience
- The fantasy-like metaverse setting made the concert more immersive, akin to stepping into a movie or music video.
- The experience commenced with an introduction to the AESPA world, complemented by special effects that aligned with the concert's theme.
- Using a light stick, recognized by hand movements and used for cheering in the metaverse, was fun and convenient.
- Exceptional sound and image quality, with CG effects that greatly amplified the stage concept.
- The VR device usage was guided by staff and instructional videos from AESPA members.
Comparison to Offline Concerts
- This was a novel experience, distinct from traditional offline concerts, and is a must-try for fans.
- Reasonably priced at around $18 per person in a cinema, inclusive of VR gear, for a 40-50 minute show featuring approximately 5 songs.
- Comfortable viewing experience, allowing for close-up watching while seated.
- However, the atmosphere resembled watching a movie quietly, differing from the communal singing and cheering at offline concerts.
- Similar to offline concerts, there were merchandise distribution, photo zones, memo zones, merchandise areas, and displays of the artists’ actual outfits at the venue.
Strong IPs
- Having experienced VR before, the high satisfaction level from this concert underscores the significance of IPs like K-POP in such formats.
Areas for Improvement
- Despite the overall positive response, a desire for less noticeable CG elements and a longer concert duration was noted.
- There was less interaction with the artists compared to offline concerts.
Additional Notes
- Another VR concert featuring KAI, another SM artist, is planned for next year.
- Metaverse, AR/VR, and NFTs could be a key element of new experience in the future of the entertainment industry.
